Gastric Sleeve (Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy)

  • The gastric sleeve, or vertical sleeve gastrectomy, is a minimally invasive weight loss surgery that involves removing approximately 75โ€“80% of the stomach. This creates a smaller, sleeve-shaped stomach that holds less food, leading to reduced calorie intake and weight loss.

The procedure also decreases hunger by removing the part of the stomach that produces the hunger hormone, ghrelin. It does not alter the intestines, so food absorption remains normal. Most patients lose 50โ€“70% of their excess weight within 12โ€“18 months and experience improvement or resolution of obesity-related conditions like diabetes and hypertension.
