Sunshine summertime is almost indisputably the best time to be outdoors and enjoy the natural beauty of Earth. Take advantage of the good weather and go outside and get some exercise! Here are some great ideas that won't stress your knees but will get your bodies engine fired up!

Go Walk Around

gone-hiking-1403317-1600x1200

Even if it just a few minutes extra each day just moving your body more than it is accustomed to will get your body processes started and burn more calories. Don't even worry about jogging or running, a brisk walk is more than enough to get your heart beat moving faster.

Swim at the Pool

While the sun is strong and the days are longer there are no good reasons why you shouldn't go out for a swim every few days! Swimming places your body in a zero gravity environment and is the perfect place to move your body without stressing the joints!

Find a Partner

Having an exercise buddy can be highly beneficial for two main reasons. First, you can hold each other accountable and boost the chances that you both will continue working out. Secondly, you have someone to enjoy the time with while you are exercising! And remember even going for a walk together counts 😉

Play a Game

Even if you are just throwing around a frisbee, or shooting some hoops, playing games makes exercise engaging and fun! BeLiteWeight wishes all of you a memorable and bright summer. Make hay while the sun shines and go outside and enjoy the weather!

Obesity Rising: Weight Loss Surgery the Answer?

weight loss surgery before and after vsg gastric sleeve bypass

With all of the recent advancements in public health education and technology it seems like Americans must have made great progress to fight the obesity epidemic that scared the nation a decade ago. However, unfortunately this is not the case. Obesity is still on the rise and modern health & fitness "fads" have done little to change the picture. One of the only sources of hope lies in the future of surgical weight loss options such as the Gastric Sleeve and Bypass. An article from the LA times suggests that many Americans are:

"Letting themselves go." – Obesity

Studies over the past 15 years have revealed that the percentage of overweight people who are even attempting to lose weight have dropped significantly. This coincides with an increased tendency for overweight people to deny their condition and claim that they are in the normal body weight class. It would seem that many people have gotten used to being overweight, often after multiple failed attempts at dieting. Unfortunately after losing weight from standard dieting

"the post-diet body undergoes a host of changes designed to ensure that weight loss is regained." – New England Journal of Medicine

It is an unfortunate fact that within five years of having lost weight the standard dieter will typically regain 95 percent of the weight they lost. This is largely because body has mechanisms in place to reach an equilibrium weight which is usually a persons largest point. Even though decreased body weight would greatly reduce stress on the heart, the body still gravitates towards the higher weight. The body simply does not change without a huge stimulus. Weight loss surgery provides this stimulus.

"Obese patients who opt for bariatric surgery… reduces mortality by 30% to 50% seven years to 15 years after surgery" – American Family Physician

The long term benefits of weight loss surgery are clear: it works. A group of 1800 patients who had the gastric bypass were surveyed by the NIDDIK 10 years afterwards and only 19 of them had regained back to near their starting point! That is barely 1% of all patients!  Overweight Americans are losing hope in the "yoyo" cycle of consistently losing weight and then putting it right back on. Weight Loss Surgery is likely the best answer for many of them.

Turn My Life Around: Michael’s Gastric Sleeve

weight loss surgery vsg vertical gastric sleeve before and after

The BeLiteWeight team is so overjoyed every time our prior patients send these inspirational and positive progress updates. A few weeks ago our team heard back from Michael, who in just 8 months almost looks like a completely new individual! Your progress is amazing… keep it up! Here is Michael's heart warming update in his own words:

I have been overweight most of my adult life trying every diet and scam plan available. I decided to to have the surgery although I was very nervous about doing this in Mexico. After the initial shock or being overwhelmed from being in another country having this procedure done I relaxed and enjoyed the great care and treatment I received from all the staff. I have lost around 70 pounds and feel great and my friends and family say I look great. This was the best decision I could have made to turn my life around. I can now enjoy my granddaughter and going to buy clothes. Went from XXXL to XL and some large shirts. From 42 waist to 36 and some 34's. 52 jacket to 48 regular. I think shopping is the most fun now when I used to hate it. Thanks again to BeLiteWeight and Dr. Jose Rodriguez and staff.

Gastric Sleeve & Bypass: Quick Facts

weight loss surgery vsg vertical gastric sleeve bypass quick facts bariatric

The exceptional medical benefits of the Gastric Sleeve and Bypass for the moderately overweight and obese have been shown through the lives of our patients time and time again! Here are some quick facts about each:

Vertical Gastric Sleeve Quick Facts:

1. The Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy, abbreviated VSG and commonly known as the Gastric Sleeve, is BeLiteWeight's most commonly chosen procedure and is both less physically invasive and generally less costly than the Roux-en-Y Bypass.

2. The VSG is a "restrictive" operation in which approximately 80 percent of the stomache is removed. This results in less amounts of food providing the satisfaction of being full.

3. The Gastric Sleeve is not "malabsorptive" and is a simpler operation compared with the Gastric Bypass. This is because the VSG does not involve any "rerouting" or reconnecting of the intestines.

4. An additional advantage of the Gastric Sleeve is its effect to limit the production of a gut hormone called "Ghrelin" which controls appetite.  Interest in food is profoundly diminished afterwards.

roux-en-y roux en y gastric bypass bariatric weight loss surgery diagram visual Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Quick Facts:

1. The Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass, also known as simply the Gastric Bypass, is BeLiteWeight's second most popular option but is more costly and invasive than the VSG.

2. The Bypass is both "restrictive" and "malabsorptive" in that it both makes the stomach physically smaller and reroutes food through the intestines bypassing the stomach.

3. Since the Gastric Bypass is "malabsorptive" not all of the food eaten is fully absorbed by the body. This greatly accelerates weight loss and provides very fast results.

4. For longer term diabetic patients and those with heartburn or acid reflux disease Gastric Bypass may be a better option to put these illnesses back in to remission.

How to Start Working Out: First Steps

howtostartworkingout       Happy new years from the BeLiteWeight team! As we begin the new year many of us are contemplating a shift in our lifestyles towards a more healthy and active balance but don't even know where to begin. Our team is here to help! Here are four very important tips to remember that will hopefully help push you through those first few weeks!

Choose Your Motivation First

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The first thing you need to do is ask yourself why you want to make this lifestyle change. For most people this is as simple as wanting to lose weight and be a healthy functioning person. Once this reason is clear to you don't lose your focus! If you don’t see the light at the end of the tunnel how are you going to get there!

Realize Improvement is Dynamic

waves-1216356-1277x503       The way the body responds to working out is scattered and varies from person to person. Often progress is delayed in the beginning, picks up very quickly, and is delayed again after sustained progress. Don’t stop in any of these situations!

Don't Rush, Start Slow!

slow-1195454-639x423

It happens all too often that people begin an exercise routine and in less than two weeks they have strained a few different muscles all over their body. Start off your lifestyle transition really slow. This means walking low distances and stretching slowly as well. Trying to rush will always hold you back in the end.

Always Do What You Feel Like

beach-1404880-639x424       Some days your body is just tired. It may not have the right nutrients. It may have worked harder the day before. Sometimes there is no reason. If you aren’t feeling up to it there is a reason your body feels that way and you should be focusing on changing that.. Rest and recovery is just part of the cycle. But if you feel like getting up and going out for a walk, just go do it! Sometimes the only thing stopping you is you!

Second Chance at Life: Nicole’s Gastric Sleeve

gastricsleeve_6months_nicoleswm

Just over seven months ago one of our patients Nicole made the life changing decision to undergo bariatric weight loss surgery. She could not be more happy and we could not be more proud! This post contains her before and after photo, a link to her testimonial page, and a short little paragraph from Nicole herself. Keep up the great work you look amazing Nicole!

"It has been almost 7 months since I had the gastric sleeve done in mexico at Star medical hospital .  I set out on this journey on April the 22nd. I was nervous and excited all at the same time. I had several friends who had gone before me so I knew a little bit about what to expect. I must say that the doctors and nurses all exceeded my expectations, and did a woderful job. I am happy to report that I have lost a total of 59 pounds since I had the surgery .  I feel amazing, and from all the comments I get from people I must look amazing. I went from wearing a size 18/20 to a 9/10. It is a good feeling to be able to walk into a regular store and pick something off the rack and know you can fit it, and not have to try it on first. I am thankful for this second chance at life and I will never take it for granted again. thank you for all your help"

Potential Trigger Foods After Weight Loss Surgery

triggerfoods

After having weight loss surgery the digestive system of the body is altered and its response to the same food you have always eaten may change. Although each surgery is unique, and each body responds to different foods in their own way, these are the certain foods groups that BeLiteWeight recommends caution. Feel free to try each of them out and test them, but be careful! Don't eat too much or too fast, and always remember to chew thoroughly!

bad food after weight loss surgery vsg bariatric bypass gastric band lap sleeve mini bypass vsg apple rice bread pasta chicken liquid calories ice cream 1. Bread

Bread can expand when in contact with different liquids and chemicals in your stomache. You may want to forgo the bread basket when eating out. Save room for your meal!

bad food after weight loss surgery vsg bariatric bypass gastric band lap sleeve mini bypass vsg apple rice bread pasta chicken liquid calories ice cream 2. Apple Skins

Apple skins are hard to fully chew potentially causing problems with the stomaches digestion and issues smoothly going down.

bad food after weight loss surgery vsg bariatric bypass gastric band lap sleeve mini bypass vsg apple rice bread pasta chicken liquid calories ice cream 3. Chicken

It is very easy for chicken to be too dry! Make sure your chicken is very moist, maybe with a sauce, and be sure to be chew it thoroughly.

bad food after weight loss surgery vsg bariatric bypass gastric band lap sleeve mini bypass vsg apple rice bread pasta chicken liquid calories ice cream 4. Pasta

As with bread,  pasta can easily absorb liquids and expand. It is also easy to take too big of a bite which can cause the uncomfortable "stuck" feeling.

bad food after weight loss surgery vsg bariatric bypass gastric band lap sleeve mini bypass vsg apple rice bread pasta chicken liquid calories ice cream 5. Liquid Calories & Ice Cream

These are the worst possible food after weight loss surgery! Sugary liquids sneak their way down to your stomache without much discomfort and quickly start packing on weight!

bad food after weight loss surgery vsg bariatric bypass gastric band lap sleeve mini bypass vsg apple rice bread pasta chicken liquid calories ice cream 6. Rice

Much like bread and pasta rice can expand a lot. Just be careful and don't eat too much or too fast!

Many of these foods are high in carbohydrates which takes up room in your stomache causing you to not be able to eat the protein rich foods that you need for your hair, muscles, and bodily functions. Focus on your protein first and then just a couple of bites of carbs.
