    • 2 tablespoons whole-grain or Dijon mustard
    • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh thyme or 2 teaspoons dried
    • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, divided
    • ½ teaspoon salt, divided

    • 2 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into 1-inch pieces
    • 1 large red onion, cut into 1-inch wedges

Directions

  • 1 Position rack in lower third of oven; preheat to 450°F. Place a large rimmed baking sheet in the oven to preheat.
  • 2 Combine mustard, thyme, 1 tablespoon oil and ¼ teaspoon each salt and pepper in a small bowl; spread the mixture evenly on chicken.
  • 3 Toss sweet potatoes and onion in a bowl with the remaining 1 tablespoon oil and ¼ teaspoon each salt and pepper. Carefully remove the baking sheet from the oven and spread the vegetables on it. Place the chicken on top of the vegetables.
  • 4 Return the pan to the oven and roast, stirring the vegetables once halfway through, until the vegetables are tender and beginning to brown and an instant-read thermometer inserted into a chicken thigh registers 165°F, 30 to 35 minutes.
  • Cut Down on Dishes: A rimmed baking sheet is great for everything from roasting to catching accidental drips and spills. For effortless cleanup and to keep your baking sheets in tip-top shape, line them with a layer of foil before each use.

Stir in finely shredded orange peel, balsamic vinegar, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper. Add shrimp, quinoa, and spinach; toss gently toss to combine.

Heather’s Year: From Bypass to Non-Scale Victories!

Heather D 1 watermark

BeLiteWeight is so grateful to share the success of Heather, who was kind enough to give her experience with us after having bypass surgery one year ago. You are amazing Heather!

There is so much I could say that has happened in a year since my surgery! So much good! If numbers are what you need to hear, my HW was 466, my weight on surgery day was 458 and as of a couple days ago my current weight is 235!! And I feel aaaawwweeesooome! However, it's the non-scale victories that have made me the most happy from day to day. I can now bend over without feeling like my airways are cut off. I can now sit in any adult sized chair without being crammed painfully at my hips. I can comfortably squeeze through passages without having to turn sideways. I can also go to festivals, events without worrying if they will have that rocking teeshirt in my size! One more victory, in my health journey family and friends have also been motivated for taking their own, it's become a team sport. We have my mother planking at 64!

Heather D 3 watermark

Hard ships?  The surgery doesnt account for my decision making, however it was a valuable tool in relearning food and my body. Now that my weightloss has slowed down due to muscle gain, it's a fine tuning process. I'm always excited for the next challenge. I did my first 5K in April and even though it was soo hard, the whole time I was blown away by my drive and ability to keep moving, keep smiling. My body felt like a powerhouse! Loose skin? Yes, this is a reality, one I expected– does it stop me? No! The way I see it, I will tighten as much as I can, and once I can no longer do so then it's to considering removal surgery. As far as worrying about the opinions of others? We all can get insecure at times, but this isnt even my final form! If a person can not celebrate my body's progress and its resulting look now, then I don't feel they should get access to once I've reached my desired shape! sorry I am a saucy southern gal!

Thank you everyone at BeLite for your help, encouragement, and just passion for helping others feel this good! Keep on dreaming and hoping and doing what you can, you will get there!!
Thank you so much, Heather! There is nothing better than hearing about your incredible achievement!

The Amazing Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar

ACV banner

There are few substances that are as versatile as apple cider vinegar. You can drink it, apply it on cuts, use it as a food preservative, or even employ it as a house cleaning agent. The numerous beneficial properties of vinegar have been known to humans since the beginning of history. Many ancient races including the Egyptians, the Greeks, and the Babylonians had been utilizing the benefits of apple cider vinegar for thousands of years. The Egyptians consumed it as a weight-loss supplement and also used it as a disinfectant for wounds. The Greek physician Hippocrates would prescribe a mixture of apple cider vinegar and honey as a tonic for colds, and he also used it for cleaning wounds and burns. It can be used as a preservative for pickled fruit and vegetables as well.

pickles-1320265

In order to make apple cider vinegar, a combination of yeast and bacteria is added to the juice of crushed apples, and the mixture is allowed to ferment until the sugar is turned into an alcohol. Then the concoction is fermented again with an acid-forming bacterial, which turns the alcohol into vinegar. The word vinegar means "sour wine".

Apple cider vinegar is able to kill bacteria and other harmful pathogens, which makes it effective for cleaning your house and as well as something that can be used for cleaning wounds. It's also been traditionally used to treat lice, infections, warts, and even nail fungus.

Studies have shown that vinegar is capable of helping people keep their blood sugar levels down and also improves insulin sensitivity, which is especially helpful for those with Type 2 Diabetes. Apple cider vinegar can also be useful to assist in lowering blood pressure as well as cholesterol, both of which are primary causes of heart disease.

Drinking apple cider vinegar before meals have been proven to assist in losing weight as it can help with feeling more fuller, longer. It is typically consumed by adding a tablespoon to a glass of water but it can also be used as a healthy alternative for making things like salad dressing. Although it's very cost effective (A bottle of unfiltered apple cider vinegar will usually retail around $3-4) it can easily be made at home, using apple scraps and sugar.

Whether cleaning your house, disinfecting a cut, or trying to lose weight, apple cider vinegar has been effectively used for thousands of years.

The Most Delicious Bread Recipe, and it’s Grain Free!

Better-Breads-300x200@2x

                                    https://www.annmariegianni.com/a-grain-free-bread-recipe-from-a-nutritional-biochemist/

There are few things that smell better than a fresh loaf of bread baking in the oven. Many people don't realize how easy it is to make their own bread at home, and the benefits are more than worth it. There are numerous advantages to baking your own bread versus buying it pre-made.

Bread from a grocery store is often loaded with sugar; sometimes white bread has as much as three grams of sugar per slice. A peanut butter and jelly sandwich for your child can contain up to 6 grams of sugar in the bread alone. Consuming large amounts of sugar is linked to various health issues, including diabetes, obesity, and heart disease. Wheat bread is a healthier option, but it can still have up to 1 gram of sugar per slice.

no grain

A great alternative is a grain-free bread, but a loaf at the store can cost anywhere from $5-$7. This recipe for a grain-free loaf is an easy way to make delicious, healthy bread at home. It uses almond flour, arrowroot flour, and coconut flour, which are excellent grain substitutes for those who are sensitive to gluten. Almond flour is low in carbohydrates and tastes slightly sweeter than wheat flour. Arrowroot flour is easier to digest, and much healthier when used in place of cornstarch. Coconut flour has a content high in protein, fiber, and healthy fats.

Crusty Boule Bread Recipe

Dry Ingredients:

  • 1 cup almond flour (100g)
  • 1 cup arrowroot flour (120g)
  • ⅓ cup coconut flour (40 g)
  • 1 tsp sea salt
  • 2 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1½ tbsp very finely ground chia
  • 2 tbsp organic psyllium husk powder

Wet Ingredients:

  • 1¼ cup filtered water
  • 2 tsp maple syrup, coconut sugar, or honey
  • 1 egg yolk + tsp water for egg wash (optional)

Directions:

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the almond flour, arrowroot flour, coconut flour and sea salt.
  2. Heat water to 105–110°F. Add maple syrup and stir. Add the yeast and let stand 10 minutes. The yeast should bubble or foam. If it doesn’t, start over.
  3. Stir the finely ground chia and psyllium powder into the yeast mixture. Let stand 1 minute to thicken, then whisk.
  4. Pour the thickened yeast-chia mixture into the dry ingredients and mix with a wooden spoon until thick and fully combined. The dough will be slightly sticky, but workable. Knead for 1 minute.
  5. Put kneaded dough back in the bowl, cover with a damp kitchen towel and place in a warm spot to rise for one hour.
  6. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. Place a pizza stone in the oven to preheat.
  7. Divide dough into two balls. Place dough balls on a square of parchment paper or a pizza peel. Dip your hands in water and shape into nice rounded shapes. Brush with egg wash, if desired. Use a serrated knife to cut a tic-tac-toe pattern on the top.
  8. Slide the prepared boules onto the preheated stone. Bake 35-40 minutes. PLEASE NOTE – baking time can vary – the measure of doneness is an internal temperature of 205-210 F.
  9. Let cool completely on a wire rack. (Not allowing the loaf to fully cool before cutting may result in a gummy interior.) When completely cool, slice and serve or store in an airtight container. To re-crisp crust, toast or reheat in a 375 F degree oven for 5-10 minutes.

Not only is this bread recipe healthy, but it's also extremely delicious and tastes as good as anything you could buy at the store, if not better.

Candy’s Mini-Bypass: A Skydiving Adventure

Candy N watermark1

Our team at BeLiteWeight is always happy to hear about the success of our patients! There is nothing better for us than to learn about how much having surgery has changed their lives for the better. We are excited to share about our wonderful patient Candy, who was able to have the adventure of her life after getting a mini gastric bypass.

Candy was kind enough to share her story with us! t before

I had the mini gastric bypass, it was an easy surgery.  The hospital in Juarez was clean and professional.  It was nice to stay in the hospital and they accommodated my son who accompanied me on this journey, instead of being shipped off to a hotel, like a lot of other weight loss services in Mexico.
My life today, 15 months after gastric bypass is a complete 360 degree change.  I do not know who that person is anymore in the before picture.  I only know the person I have become after weight loss surgery, I walk, bike, workout, including kickboxing to say fit and get toned.  Even though my stomach controls how much food I can eat.  I still really watch what I eat.  Clean, organic food, very rarely any processed food or food with refined sugars.  Don 't get me wrong I still par-take in some of my favorite junk food, but to tell the truth, it does not taste the same, when I do take a bite or two.  I would rather eat an apple or have a protein shake (Herbal Life has great shakes, it is my daily breakfast)!

About three months after the surgery and down about 50 lbs., I hit a plateau for about 3 weeks, but from what I have read it is normal.  I decided it was time to start working out, as this surgery is a tool, not a cure.  Now, I workout on a regular basis and sometimes to much, as my addiction to food and changed to my addiction to workout and eat right.  I really enjoy working out, walking, just got a new 3 speed bike cruiser, I joined a kickboxing gym and I actually just SKYDIVED for the first time in my life.  It was worth the wait to lose all my weight for the SKYDIVING ADVENTURE.
I am so glad that I had weight loss surgery, my life had definitely improved and I feel I will live longer, side note, been off high blood pressure medication for over 6 months.

That is my story!

How to Start Working Out: First Steps

howtostartworkingout       Happy new years from the BeLiteWeight team! As we begin the new year many of us are contemplating a shift in our lifestyles towards a more healthy and active balance but don't even know where to begin. Our team is here to help! Here are four very important tips to remember that will hopefully help push you through those first few weeks!

Choose Your Motivation First

The first thing you need to do is ask yourself why you want to make this lifestyle change. For most people this is as simple as wanting to lose weight and be a healthy functioning person. Once this reason is clear to you don't lose your focus! If you don’t see the light at the end of the tunnel how are you going to get there!

Realize Improvement is Dynamic

waves-1216356-1277x503       The way the body responds to working out is scattered and varies from person to person. Often progress is delayed in the beginning, picks up very quickly, and is delayed again after sustained progress. Don’t stop in any of these situations!

Don't Rush, Start Slow!

It happens all too often that people begin an exercise routine and in less than two weeks they have strained a few different muscles all over their body. Start off your lifestyle transition really slow. This means walking low distances and stretching slowly as well. Trying to rush will always hold you back in the end.

Always Do What You Feel Like

If you aren’t feeling up to it there is a reason your body feels that way and you should be focusing on changing that.. Rest and recovery is just part of the cycle. But if you feel like getting up and going out for a walk, just go do it! Sometimes the only thing stopping you is you!
