My heart is full of gratitude as I sit down to write this email . Next week will mark 3 years since I’ve had surgery with Dr.Rodriguez. What a roller coaster this ride has been. From learning to portion control, learning new habits, learning to love the gym , it has honestly been learning how to live again. >>>> We all these changes came self love I never knew I had . Confidence to follow my dreams and the well power to keep going. I have been able to maintain an average of 105lbs lost and have gained about 15 safely . I have had a breast reduction with a lift and I am currently recovering from a tummy Tuck with lipo of the back and flanks. I feel great . Life is great. The work is never done that’s for sure . We will forever gain and loose and fluctuate. What’s important is the healthy habits I have been able to maintain and the structure I have set for myself . I will once again tell you I’ll never forget that lunch time phone call outside my local Starbucks where you told me your story and within a month I had my surgery booked . I was ready .

For me, the decision to have weight loss surgery came when I was on vacation with my family and I couldn’t walk without getting winded or get around to see the attractions. I had to sit on a bench or in the car and wait for the family to finish having fun. It was a miserable trip and I knew then something had to change. Once I returned home I started looking into weight loss surgery. I knew I couldn’t have the surgery in the United States as my insurance had many hoops and I would still have to pay an enormous amount of money even with a deductible. I did my research on several companies in Mexico and decided on Belite Weight. I am beyond pleased with my decision!! This was absolutely the BEST decision of my life. I took my health back. I chose to have the surgery in Juarez, MX. My mom traveled with me and we were treated exceptionally well from the time we were picked up until they took us back to the airport. There wasn’t much of a language barrier and everyone was so helpful and nice. The staff made sure my mom and I were comfortable and taken care of and the hospital was very clean and nice. I owe everything to Dr. Rodriguez and his staff!! This has been a journey and I have learned so much through it.
I have lost 200 pounds in a year!! My body has gone through many positive changes and I have become a better ME!! I am so happy and I get complimented on my smile often. I can do things with my daughter that I haven’t ever been able to do such as ride amusement park rides or play basketball with her. I enjoy getting out and exercising and being in nature. There are many ways in which obesity can negatively affect one's health. From sleep apnea to high blood pressure, the added weight can impact the body in many ways. In particular, the risk of developing type 2 diabetes increases drastically as a result of obesity. Many studies have shown that losing weight can lessen that risk, as well as help, bring the disease under control for those who have it.
Losing weight can be very difficult, however, especially if one is suffering from other health conditions. Bariatric surgery is a method of permanently or temporarily reducing the size of a patient's stomach which causes a change in the digestive process. There are three different types of Bariatric surgeries. There are restrictive surgeries like adjustable gastric banding and sleeve gastrectomy. There are also malabsorptive/ restrictive surgeries like gastric bypass (or Roux-en-Y). In addition, there are electrical device implantation surgeries such as the Maestro rechargeable system that is put into the abdomen to lessen food intake.
It's always best to go by a doctor's recommendation, but bariatric surgery has consistently proven to be an extremely effective and long-lasting method for putting diabetes into remission. Although changing diet and exercise is always recommended, these methods alone may not be enough to sufficiently reverse life-long habits that contributed to the onset of diabetes, and patients who have had surgery are statistically proven to have more permanent positive changes in lifestyle as well as better health.
Andrei Keidar conducted an analysis that showed enormous benefits for bariatric surgery patients who had diabetes. Studies have shown that gastric bypass is among the more successful procedures in regards to treating and reversing diabetes, in many cases the patients' insulin levels return to normal mere days after having surgery. In 87% of cases, patients who had bariatric surgery not only lost weight but showed significant improvement in their diabetes.
Although having surgery will always come with risk, the studies have shown that the benefits of surgery far outweigh the risks.

There is so much I could say that has happened in a year since my surgery! So much good! If numbers are what you need to hear, my HW was 466, my weight on surgery day was 458 and as of a couple days ago my current weight is 235!! And I feel aaaawwweeesooome! However, it's the non-scale victories that have made me the most happy from day to day. I can now bend over without feeling like my airways are cut off. I can now sit in any adult sized chair without being crammed painfully at my hips. I can comfortably squeeze through passages without having to turn sideways. I can also go to festivals, events without worrying if they will have that rocking teeshirt in my size! One more victory, in my health journey family and friends have also been motivated for taking their own, it's become a team sport. We have my mother planking at 64!
Hard ships? The surgery doesnt account for my decision making, however it was a valuable tool in relearning food and my body. Now that my weightloss has slowed down due to muscle gain, it's a fine tuning process. I'm always excited for the next challenge. I did my first 5K in April and even though it was soo hard, the whole time I was blown away by my drive and ability to keep moving, keep smiling. My body felt like a powerhouse! Loose skin? Yes, this is a reality, one I expected– does it stop me? No! The way I see it, I will tighten as much as I can, and once I can no longer do so then it's to considering removal surgery. As far as worrying about the opinions of others? We all can get insecure at times, but this isnt even my final form! If a person can not celebrate my body's progress and its resulting look now, then I don't feel they should get access to once I've reached my desired shape! sorry I am a saucy southern gal!

One of the best things about summer is the abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables that become available. A great way to enjoy the delicious variety of seasonal produce is to make an easy, healthy soup. Although some might say that summertime is too hot for soup, it can actually make a great light meal when you don't want to be weighed down by heavy food in the heat. Here are some different soup recipes that will satisfy your taste buds while keeping you full and satisfied.
First, we have a scrumptious recipe that uses roasted corn and peppers. The char from the roasted corn and peppers adds the perfect smoky flavor.
- 16 oz (2 cups) roasted sweet corn*
- 32 oz vegetable broth
- 16 oz unsweetened coconut milk
- 1 large onion, chopped
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 roasted red bell pepper**
- 1 tsp chili powder
- 1/2 tsp cayenne
- 1 tbls smoked paprika
- 1/2 tsp liquid smoke, optional (I used hickory)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Heat olive oil in large stock pan and sauté onion, bell pepper, corn, and garlic until soft.
- Add chili powder, cayenne, smoked paprika, and salt and pepper
- De glaze pan with vegetable stock, add liquid smoke and bring to a boil
- Turn off heat and separate half of the vegetable mixture in the pot in a separate bowl
- Pour the broth and other half of vegetables into a blender and blend until smooth
- Return the blended mixture back into the pot on the stove, add the separated vegetables, and pour coconut milk into the pot
- Bring back to a boil and adjust for salt, pepper, and smokiness
This delicious summer minestrone is packed with tons of summer vegetables as well as zucchini, peppers, and beans.
- 1 Tbsp olive oil
- 1/2 cup diced onion (about 1/2 onion)
- 1/2 cup sliced leeks, white and light green parts only (see How to Clean Leeks), about 1/2 leek
- 1/2 cup diced celery (about one celery rib)
- 1/4 cup diced red bell pepper (about 1/4 of one bell pepper)
- 3 cloves garlic, minced (about 1 Tbsp)
- 6 cups chicken stock (can use good quality vegetable stock for vegetarian option)
- 1 bay leaf
- 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves (or 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme)
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt (add more salt if using unsalted stock)
- 2 cups large dice zucchini (or other summer squash such as crookneck or pattypan)
- 1 cup fresh green beans, trimmed and cut into 1-inch lengths
- 2 roma tomatoes, diced
- 1/2 cup cooked small white beans
- 1/2 cup dry ditalini or any small pasta (omit for gluten-free option)
- Fresh basil for garnish
- Grated Parmesan cheese for garnish (optional)
1 Sauté onions, leeks, celery, bell pepper, garlic, in olive oil: Heat 1 Tbsp of olive oil in a large, thick-bottomed pot on medium high. Add the diced onion, leeks, celery, and bell pepper. Cook for 8 to 10 minutes until softened, lowering the heat to medium to prevent browning.
Add the minced garlic and cook for a minute more, until fragrant.
2 Add stock, seasonings, beans, pasta, vegetables, then simmer: Add the chicken stock, bay leaf, thyme, and salt to the pot. Increase heat to bring to a simmer, then add the zucchini, green beans, tomatoes, white beans, and pasta.
Heat to a simmer again and lower the heat to maintain a steady simmer. Cook for 10 minutes until the vegetables and the pasta are cooked through.
3 Garnish with basil and Parmesan: Garnish with thinly sliced fresh basil and grated Parmesan cheese to serve.

I had the mini gastric bypass, it was an easy surgery. The hospital in Juarez was clean and professional. It was nice to stay in the hospital and they accommodated my son who accompanied me on this journey, instead of being shipped off to a hotel, like a lot of other weight loss services in Mexico.
My life today, 15 months after gastric bypass is a complete 360 degree change. I do not know who that person is anymore in the before picture. I only know the person I have become after weight loss surgery, I walk, bike, workout, including kickboxing to say fit and get toned. Even though my stomach controls how much food I can eat. I still really watch what I eat. Clean, organic food, very rarely any processed food or food with refined sugars. Don 't get me wrong I still par-take in some of my favorite junk food, but to tell the truth, it does not taste the same, when I do take a bite or two. I would rather eat an apple or have a protein shake (Herbal Life has great shakes, it is my daily breakfast)!
About three months after the surgery and down about 50 lbs., I hit a plateau for about 3 weeks, but from what I have read it is normal. I decided it was time to start working out, as this surgery is a tool, not a cure. Now, I workout on a regular basis and sometimes to much, as my addiction to food and changed to my addiction to workout and eat right. I really enjoy working out, walking, just got a new 3 speed bike cruiser, I joined a kickboxing gym and I actually just SKYDIVED for the first time in my life. It was worth the wait to lose all my weight for the SKYDIVING ADVENTURE.
I am so glad that I had weight loss surgery, my life had definitely improved and I feel I will live longer, side note, been off high blood pressure medication for over 6 months.That is my story!
Summer is just around the corner which means that the hot weather is on its way. One of the most important things we can do for our body when its hot outside is to stay hydrated. We tend to sweat a lot more in the heat, and we need to make up for the water that our body has lost. Not only does it give you more supple skin, but staying well hydrated is beneficial to your brain, heart, muscles, joints, and basically anything else that helps your body keep moving. Drinking water is great, but there are other options for making refreshing beverages that are not only fun for the summer, but very beneficial to your health.
Homemade Keto Electrolyte Drink
- 6 cups water (~ 1.5 l)
- The juice of one medium lemon ( 55ml)
- ½ tsp potassium chloride or lite salt.
- ¼ tsp pink Himalayan Salt.
- 2 tsp Natural Calm magnesium supplement.
- Sweetener to taste.
- Optional: 2 squeezes of Water Enhancer ( Fruit Flavored, Naturally sweetened with Stevia)
Rehydrating Infused Lemon Ginger Turmeric Water
Two indredibly powerful ingredients are tumeric and fresh lemon juice. Tumeric works as an anti-inflammatory, while lemon juice helps boost white blood cells. This recipe utilizes both to create a healthy drink that will revitalize you and quench your thirst
- Lemon -1
- Ginger- 1-inch piece
- Turmeric -1/2 tsp
- Salt- a pinch
Clean and cut the lemon into slices. Clean the ginger root and slice it. In a glass bottle layer the lemon and ginger root. Add the turmeric powder. Fill it with water, put the lid on and you’re ready to go.
Carrot Apple Protein Smoothie
Here is a recipe for an easy and delicious smoothie that is high in protein and fiber. Protein helps to build and repair tissue, while fiber helps to help you feel fuller, longer.
- 4 oz carrots – chopped
- 1 apple
- 1/4 avocado – pitted
- 1/2 cup cup apple sauce – (one container)
- 1/2 lime – juiced
- 1 tbsp pea protein
- 1 1/4 cup water
- 1 cup ice
Pro tip: For an extra creamy smoothie, or if you don’t have a high-powered blender, lightly steaming the carrots for a few minutes will help them blend quickly and smoothly.
Natural Hydration Drink Recipe for Kids
It's also good to make sure that our kids are staying hydrated after long days spent playing in the sun. This drink is more fun than plain water but not unhealthy like sugary juice or soda.
- 3 cup – sugar free coconut water
- 1 cup – raw apple juice
- 1 cup – ice
- 1/8 teaspoon – sea salt
- 1 tablespoon – honey
- 1/4 medium – lime
- 1/4 medium – orange
- Put all ingredients in a high powered blender, and blend for 1 minute.
- Pour into containers and enjoy immediately or store in the fridge for later. Will stay good in the fridge for 1 week.
- Optional: add a squeeze of lime and orange juice!
Cucumber Tomato Avocado Salad
There are also ways to stay hydrated that don't involve drinking. There are many foods that contain a high water content, like cucumbers, which can make a delicious meal that keeps you feeling refreshed despite the heat.
- 2 tbsp Lemon juice
- 2 tbsp Olive oil
- 1/2 tsp Garlic powder
- 1/4 tsp Black pepper
- 2 large Hass avocados (halved, pitted, peeled, and cubed)*
- 6 medium Tomato (cut into wedges)
- 2 cups English cucumber (chopped)
- 3 tbsp Fresh dill (chopped)
- 3 tbsp Fresh parsley (chopped)
For the dressing: In a small bowl, whisk together the lemon juice, olive oil, garlic powder, and black pepper. (Alternatively, place in an airtight container and shake vigorously.)
In a large bowl, combine the avocado, tomatoes, cucumber, fresh dill, and fresh parsley.
Pour the dressing over the salad and toss to coat. Serve immediately.
