Turmeric: A Super Root

turmeric heading

In order for our bodies to work properly, we have to keep them well fueled. What you eat can make a huge difference in your energy levels, your mood, and of course your overall health. It's important that your diet is giving your body the best fuel possible.  A super food that has been proven to contain many health benefits is turmeric. Turmeric is a root that is similar to ginger, and it can be found most notably in curry. (It's what gives curry it's beautiful yellow color.) In India, the belief that turmeric holds various health properties has persisted for thousands of years, and now science is proving that belief to be correct.

The main ingredient of Turmeric is curcumin, which is where it derives its numerous health benefits. One of its perks is that it's an antioxidant. Antioxidants help to counteract the effects of aging and disease that are caused by the oxidation of tissue. Curcumin also increases the productivity of the antioxidants that are already present in our system. So not only does it block oxidants from damaging our tissues, but it also strengthens the other antioxidants in our body so that they work better.

In addition, curcumin works as an anti-inflammatory. Low-level, chronic inflammation is thought to be responsible for a variety of chronic illnesses that afflict many people, such as heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer's, and other degenerative diseases. It can help to prevent heart disease by improving the function of our blood vessel lining, which regulates things like blood pressure as well as blood clotting. In addition, curcumin has been shown to be effective in the treatment of arthritis, as some patients have reported that it works just as well as other anti-inflammatory drugs.

Curcumin also has the ability to help elevate levels of a growth hormone called Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF). BDNF is shown to prevent brain-related diseases, and low levels of BDNF correspond with certain health issues such as depression and Alzheimer's Disease. Alzheimer's Disease is in part caused by inflammation as well as oxidation, and curcumin works to counteract them both.

A powerful remedy for cystic acne is a relatively simple mixture of turmeric with equal parts fresh lemon juice and unfiltered apple cider vinegar. It creates a paste that is extremely effective in preventing and healing acne cysts. The only downside is that it can temporarily dye the skin, so it's best to do it at night before bed.

The amount of curcumin in turmeric is relatively small, so it's recommended to use a turmeric extract in order to receive the full benefit of its potential. Another way to boost your body's ability to absorb curcumin is by eating it with piperine, which is the chemical in pepper that makes it spicy. It's also recommended to consume turmeric with a meal heavy in fat because curcumin is fat-soluble, which means it needs fat to break down.

The best health plan is prevention, and using turmeric is a great way to help your body fight against the degenerative diseases that are prevalent in today's society.

Candy’s Mini-Bypass: A Skydiving Adventure

Candy N watermark1

Our team at BeLiteWeight is always happy to hear about the success of our patients! There is nothing better for us than to learn about how much having surgery has changed their lives for the better. We are excited to share about our wonderful patient Candy, who was able to have the adventure of her life after getting a mini gastric bypass.

Candy was kind enough to share her story with us! t before

I had the mini gastric bypass, it was an easy surgery.  The hospital in Juarez was clean and professional.  It was nice to stay in the hospital and they accommodated my son who accompanied me on this journey, instead of being shipped off to a hotel, like a lot of other weight loss services in Mexico.
My life today, 15 months after gastric bypass is a complete 360 degree change.  I do not know who that person is anymore in the before picture.  I only know the person I have become after weight loss surgery, I walk, bike, workout, including kickboxing to say fit and get toned.  Even though my stomach controls how much food I can eat.  I still really watch what I eat.  Clean, organic food, very rarely any processed food or food with refined sugars.  Don 't get me wrong I still par-take in some of my favorite junk food, but to tell the truth, it does not taste the same, when I do take a bite or two.  I would rather eat an apple or have a protein shake (Herbal Life has great shakes, it is my daily breakfast)!

About three months after the surgery and down about 50 lbs., I hit a plateau for about 3 weeks, but from what I have read it is normal.  I decided it was time to start working out, as this surgery is a tool, not a cure.  Now, I workout on a regular basis and sometimes to much, as my addiction to food and changed to my addiction to workout and eat right.  I really enjoy working out, walking, just got a new 3 speed bike cruiser, I joined a kickboxing gym and I actually just SKYDIVED for the first time in my life.  It was worth the wait to lose all my weight for the SKYDIVING ADVENTURE.
I am so glad that I had weight loss surgery, my life had definitely improved and I feel I will live longer, side note, been off high blood pressure medication for over 6 months.

That is my story!

Keto Diet: A Helpful Short-Term Tool

KETO 2

Everyone is talking about The Keto diet! Many celebrities swear that it is the fastest and most effective way to shed weight. The diet is essentially an extremely low carb regiment. By eliminating carbohydrates, your body goes into a natural state of ketosis where it breaks down the fats in your liver and produces ketones. This is a process called beta-oxidation, and the ketones are used to fuel your brain and body, instead of what your body normally uses for fuel, which is glucose, or sugar. Anyways, all that science means that your body is actually burning fat instead of using its other sources of energy!

There can be many other benefits to switching to a low carb diet too. Not only is it an effective method for weight loss, but it can also help prevent and maintain diabetes by controlling your blood sugar. Additionally, making this change can also improve brain functionality as well. Studies have shown that increased fatty acid intake can aid your concentration and focus. Keto benefits don’t stop there either! The diet has also been shown to be good for your skin and help clear up acne!

So what exactly is a Keto diet? When following a keto diet, it's good to avoid things with sugar, such as bread, fruit, or starchy foods like potatoes and beans. What you should be eating are things like meat, greens, seeds, nuts, and other fatty foods like milk and cheese. The majority of food to be consumed is fat, followed by protein and then a small number of carbs. Green, leafy vegetables are best, such as Kale and Spinach!

There are some potential side effects associated with the Keto diet. It is possible to experience cramping in the legs as well as constipation. In order to best prevent this, it is important to keep hydrated. When switching to a high fat, low carb diet the body goes through a transitional period where it adapts to burning fat instead of glucose. During that time you might feel tired but that is normal! Your energy levels will return to normal after your body has finished adapting to using a new fuel source.

It is truly fascinating the way the human body works and how what we eat directly affects our ability to function. Whether or not you're interested in trying the Keto diet, it's best to do your own research and formulate a plan that is best for you!

6 Medicines to None! Mitch’s Gastric Bypass Journey

Capture

Nothing warms our hearts more than hearing back from our bariatric patients and learning of their success. One of our remarkable patients shared with us an inspirational letter for us to pass along regarding his results with the Gastric Bypass over the past year. It is truly incredible that his doctor took him off of all of his meds! Here is his story:

"My Journey.

My journey started in May of 2016. My doctor had told me that if I did not do something about my weight and diabetes, I would be dead sooner rather than later. I had just turned 61, 5’10, weighed 303 lbs., and had an A1c of over 15. Sleep Apnea, neuropathy in my feet, on 6 different medications from diabetes to blood pressure, you name it, and I had it.

I had considered weight loss surgery in the past, but my insurance would not cover it, and I just could not afford the cost. I went to google and typed “can weight loss surgery be financed?” And voila- Beliteweight! I will admit, the part about going to Mexico to have the procedure done was a little intimidating, but after extensive research and interviewing several people who had already done it, my wife and I decided to proceed. I need to interject here that I would have probably chickened out if not for the incredible support that my wife gave me every step of the way. It gave me great piece of mind having her by my side throughout.

The people that I dealt with at Beliteweight, JoAnn and Jamie were great! Once, we decided on a date, July 4, 2016, they took care of everything. Any question that I had was always answered immediately. They sent me all the paperwork and made sure that I understood it, and was always clear on what I needed to do. There are some pre-op things you need to do to minimize post op pain and maximize recovery, and it was clear they cared enough to try to make sure I was following these guidelines.

I arrived in El Paso at noon on the 4th. Before I could get my bag out of the overhead bin, my ride to the hospital called and was waiting for me in baggage claim. We got to the hospital between 1 and 2, was in my room by 2:30, taken down to surgery at 4, and was walking the halls at 10 that evening. That is not an exaggeration! I spent all day Tuesday walking the halls, was visited several times by the surgeon and hospital administrator, and learning the next few weeks diet. Wednesday, I was discharged at 10, and driven back to the airport and was home Wednesday night. I went back to work on Friday.

The hospital was incredible. The nurses for the most part did not speak English, but we got good at charades, and they were always so sweet. As an example, the night nurses used the flashlight on their cell phone so they would not have to turn on the room light and wake up my wife. Both doctors spoke perfect English, and saw me several times during my stay. Frankly, American hospitals could take a few lessons from them.

I mentioned earlier that I was on 6 medications before the surgery. I went to my local doctor 3 weeks after surgery, and he took me off all my meds! My type 2 diabetes was in total remission, my neuropathy was gone, and I put my c-pap machine on my closet shelf. That, dear people, is a miracle!

I had lost 20 lbs. before weight loss surgery, so I was at 283 Lbs. and had a 52-inch waist. Last August, I decided to take some of the money I was saving on groceries, and eating out, and hired a personal trainer to help me tone and get some flexibility. On my one-year anniversary of surgery, I weighed 203 lbs. and a 38-inch waist. Heck, I even went extreme zip lining in January in Jamaica. Pretty miraculous for somebody that a year earlier had to sit at a table in a restaurant because he could not fit in a booth.

On July 24, this year on a very hot day, I was at work, and started feeling light headed. I fainted, and was rushed to the hospital where I was told that I was in the middle of a heart attack! I needed to have quadruple bypass surgery. My surgeon gave me a 98% chance of a full recovery and said he honestly believed that the one reason I was not already dead was because of the weight loss and exercising! The surgery was a success, and less than 6 weeks later, he has cleared me to resume normal activities.

I started this journey because I knew I needed to change my life style. I have been able to do things that I thought I would never be able to do. People treat me different since I have lost the weight, I can buy clothes at a regular store, and have more variety. Flying in an airplane is a LOT more comfortable. Things like hang gliding and zip lining are back on the table.

But, more importantly, much more importantly, weight loss surgery saved my life! And If I had not found Beliteweight, well, then I would not have been able to bore, I mean regale you with my journey.

The BeLiteWeight team is so proud of your remarkable work Mitch! Keep up all of the hard effort, it is definitely paying off!!

Sleep Apnea and Weight Loss Surgery: An Unlikely Remedy?

With over 12 years facilitating weight-loss surgeries for people with many different levels of obesity and weight related health histories BeLiteWeight can attest that obesity and Obstructive Sleep Apnea come hand-in-hand. Unfortunately, it is far too common for those reaching out for help losing weight to also be battling a number of other medical conditions with the most common including diabetes and hypertension as well. The good news is that BeLiteWeight's long history also substantiates the beneficial effects that weight loss surgery has had on patients with Sleep Apnea. With over 10 thousand prior patients BeLiteWeight has had countless first-hand encounters with obesity and Sleep Apnea which have nearly all resulted with major improvements following the Gastric Sleeve or Bypass. Just one example comes from one of our amazing patients Torre who in just 6 months had no more signs of sleep Apnea! Here is her before and after picture and what she had to say about the process.

gastric_sleeve_6months_torrebwm

"I've lost 65 pounds since my surgery on July 18, 2015. I went from a size 16 to a size 7. I'm happy to report that I'm medication free. I'm no longer on High Blood Pressure, Cholesterol and no longer in danger of being on diabetic medication. I no longer have sleep apnea and no longer sleep with that dreaded CPAP machine at night. I want to thank BeLiteWeight and their staff for saving my life and giving my life back. I love me and that hasn't been the case in a very long time. – Torre"

While BeLiteWeight cannot guarantee similar medical results due to bariatric surgery, a 2013 study established by the Obesity Surgery Journal also further validates the correlation between OSA and obesity. The study found that out of nearly 14 thousand patients over 75% found improvement in their sleep apnea following their procedures. BeLiteWeight's own history not only supports this figure but suggests that it could be even higher. Nearly all of our patients who are suffering from Sleep Apnea see tremendous results within just months!

Inspiration from Alex: 2x Cancer & Obesity Survivor

before and after weight loss surgery gasrtic sleeve bypass band reux en

BeLiteWeight patient Alex P is by no means a stranger to first-class medical standards. Unfortunately having had, and successfully treated, two types of life-threatening cancers Alex has had several surgeries and procedures including chemotherapy and radiation treatment in Miami, Florida. Despite having received so much treatment in first-class American hospitals in Alex's latest letter to BeLiteWeight he thanked our team for providing an experience that was "just as good or better, than those we have in the United States." Alex was so impressed with our facilities, surgeons, and support staff that he composed a video and wrote a detailed letter for all potential surgical weight loss patients to watch and read before making their decision. We are proud to share them both!

"My name is Alexander P and I have been battling obesity for several years. I have tried many diets and shake replacement companies and even though I did have success with some of them, it is not a lifelong quest of mine to live off shakes for the rest of my life.  I am also a two-time cancer survivor and happy to have survived both of my health scares.  I have been researching weight loss surgery for several years now and I have attended a half dozen gastric surgery information seminars.

About two years ago, I came across be lite weight in a magazine ad and began to do my research on them.  From the moment I first contacted Joanne, Jaime and the other company representatives, they’ve always answered and returned my calls promptly and answered every single question that I ever asked.  They emailed me a list of past clients that had already had the gastric sleeve surgery abroad in Mexico and I was able to communicate with over twenty men and women to ask them questions about their experience with the company and their success with the surgery.  Absolutely everyone that I spoke with told me that they wish they had had the surgery sooner and that I wouldn’t regret my decision to utilize this company.

So, in September/October of 2016 my wife and I decided to pay our deposit and pick a date for our gastric sleeve surgeries, to be completed in Juarez, Mexico at the Star Medica Hospital.  I have had several procedures in Miami, FL. My two cancer saving surgeries, foot surgery, along with chemotherapy and radiation. I can honestly say that our experience at the Star Medica Hospital was nothing short of amazing.  The hospital is super clean, the staff is very friendly and there to help you at every turn.

We arrived into El Paso International Airport, picked up by a transportation company that works with the agency to transport us into Mexico and directly to the Hospital.  We were received and checked in quickly and brought upstairs to our room. We had a quick check-up and were scheduled for our surgeries the same afternoon we arrived.  Our surgeries took approximately 30-40 minutes and within two hours after surgery, we were both walking around the lobby of our floor to begin to release the gases in our bodies in order not to experience any blood clots.  The food at the hospital was good for the two days that we were there.  My father-in-law, who stayed with us in case we needed assistance, was also very impressed with the service we all received, including him at Star Medica.  I would most certainly recommend Star Medica Hospital in Juarez, MX and the entire staff there, if you decide to have any of the gastric surgeries utilizing be lite weight for your procedure.

My wife and I are now entering our seventh month since our gastric sleeve surgery on December 8th, 2016.  My wife has lost 75 lbs. and I have dropped 122 lbs.  Prior to my surgery, I weighed 408 lbs. and I am now weighing in at 286 pounds and counting. I feel amazing and like everyone else before me, my only regret, is I wish I’d done the surgery earlier in my life.  However, everything happens for a reason. I am very happy with our results and look forward to dropping a little more weight and reaching my goal of 260 pounds.

This surgery has completely changed our lives.  We eat so much healthier now and have been able to get out of the house and experience so many different activities, that I struggled to enjoy in the past, due to my excessive weight.  We will be able to travel abroad more often, knowing that we are much more physically fit and able to walk longer distances and enjoy a better quality of life, thanks to the amazing staff at “Be Lite Weight”, especially Joanne and Jaime and the amazing Hospital staff at Star Medica Hospital in Juarez, MX.

Anyone out there thinking of having the gastric procedure done for them?  I highly recommend you use Be Lite Weight as your agency and also decide to have your procedure done in Mexico. You will not regret your decision.  The price is definitely right and much cheaper than the US and the doctors and medical staff are just as good or better, than those we have in the United States."

Alexander P

Obesity Rising: Weight Loss Surgery the Answer?

weight loss surgery before and after vsg gastric sleeve bypass

With all of the recent advancements in public health education and technology it seems like Americans must have made great progress to fight the obesity epidemic that scared the nation a decade ago. However, unfortunately this is not the case. Obesity is still on the rise and modern health & fitness "fads" have done little to change the picture. One of the only sources of hope lies in the future of surgical weight loss options such as the Gastric Sleeve and Bypass. An article from the LA times suggests that many Americans are:

"Letting themselves go." – Obesity

Studies over the past 15 years have revealed that the percentage of overweight people who are even attempting to lose weight have dropped significantly. This coincides with an increased tendency for overweight people to deny their condition and claim that they are in the normal body weight class. It would seem that many people have gotten used to being overweight, often after multiple failed attempts at dieting. Unfortunately after losing weight from standard dieting

"the post-diet body undergoes a host of changes designed to ensure that weight loss is regained." – New England Journal of Medicine

It is an unfortunate fact that within five years of having lost weight the standard dieter will typically regain 95 percent of the weight they lost. This is largely because body has mechanisms in place to reach an equilibrium weight which is usually a persons largest point. Even though decreased body weight would greatly reduce stress on the heart, the body still gravitates towards the higher weight. The body simply does not change without a huge stimulus. Weight loss surgery provides this stimulus.

"Obese patients who opt for bariatric surgery… reduces mortality by 30% to 50% seven years to 15 years after surgery" – American Family Physician

The long term benefits of weight loss surgery are clear: it works. A group of 1800 patients who had the gastric bypass were surveyed by the NIDDIK 10 years afterwards and only 19 of them had regained back to near their starting point! That is barely 1% of all patients!  Overweight Americans are losing hope in the "yoyo" cycle of consistently losing weight and then putting it right back on. Weight Loss Surgery is likely the best answer for many of them.
