The above BMI classification and health risk information is based on "Clinical Guidelines on the Identification,
Evaluation, and Treatment of Overweight and Obesity in Adults" published in 1998 by National Heart,
Lung and Blood Institute, National Institutes of Health.
The indicated health risk includes disease risk for type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease.
Ideal body weight is associated with the lowest death rate in insured populations and is taken from the 1983 Metropolitan Life Insurance Company tables.
NOTE: BMI does not distinguish between excess fat and muscle. A muscular individual may have a BMI in excess of 25 without increased health risks.
