It is common knowledge that eating healthy foods is an essential component of any weight loss strategy. However, over the past few decades there have been many wild claims made about various foods and their role in your diet.
But should you really believe everything you have read?
Myth #1: Red wine is good for your heart.
The Truth: Alcohol in any form–be it wine, beer, or hard liquor–boosts HDL, the good cholesterol in your body. While wine gets all the glory, any form of alcohol in moderation can reduce your risk of heart disease. Of course, moderation means no more than one or two drinks a day…
Myth #2: Go organic for higher nutritional content.
The Truth: While organic foods do help the environment a little bit, there is no evidence that shows organic foods contain any higher nutritional content than other foods. In the end, the only thing organic foods have over regular foods is a higher price tag.
Myth #3: Wheat is the enemy.
The Truth: While celebrities praise gluten free diets, unless you suffer from celiac disease or specific gluten sensitivities, then there is no reason you shouldn't eat a piece of bread or your beloved doughnut. As with anything, moderation is crucial, but breads provide essential nutrients such as B vitamins and folate, which our bodies need to function properly.
Myth #4: Raw veggies pack more of a nutritional punch.
The Truth: While raw veggies do taste good, cooking them actually helps break down the fibrous cell walls within your vegetables. This makes it easier for your body to digest and absorb the nutrients they contain. In fact, carrots, corn, and tomatoes should always be cooked before they are consumed.
Myth #5: Brown eggs are better than white eggs.
The Truth: An egg, is an egg, is an egg. It doesn't matter if it’s brown, white, or yellow. The nutritional content contained within your eggs does not change because of the color of the shell. In this case, the myth just isn't all it’s cracked up to be and just costs you more money in the check-out line.
